My Expectations of Puppy Families

A partnership for lifelong puppy welfare

At Emerald Park Border Collies, we believe puppies thrive when both breeder and owner share values, knowledge, and responsibility.

This page outlines what I hope for in my puppy families, so every dog receives the best care, guidance, and environment from day one and throughout their life.

Care and daily responsibilities

I expect puppy families to provide:

  • Safe, secure housing with appropriate fencing and space for exercise

  • Species-appropriate nutrition and daily care, including regular veterinary checks and preventative health measures

  • Thoughtful socialisation and enrichment, including age-appropriate mental and physical stimulation

  • Joint-safe development practices: exercise and play guided to support long-term soundness and prevent injury

  • Healthy weight management: keeping your puppy at a lean, active weight to support healthy joints and growth

My guidance on exercise, diet, and development is grounded in evidence-based, dog-centred principles — and I ask families to follow these recommendations closely.

Communication

Open communication is key to a successful partnership.

I ask families to:

  • Report any health, behavioural, or developmental concerns promptly, at any stage of the dog’s life

  • Provide brief weekly updates during the first 4 weeks after bringing a puppy home (via SMS, email, phone, or messenger) to help support a smooth transition

  • Engage with me as a resource — your breeder remains available for advice and guidance for life

This is not oversight — it’s a collaboration that ensures puppies grow into well-adjusted, happy, and healthy adult dogs.

Ethical rehoming

I care about the lifelong welfare of every puppy.

Families agree to:

  • Never rehome a dog independently without breeder involvement

  • Work with me to find an appropriate home if circumstances change, or, when needed, allow the dog to return to my care

  • Ensure that all transitions respect the dog’s welfare, safety, and emotional needs

Sharing stories and photos

I love celebrating my puppies and sharing educational resources:

  • Families agree that I may use photos and updates for education or promotion of responsible breeding practices

  • This is an important part of helping others understand Border Collie development and welfare

  • Your dog’s story may inspire or guide other puppy families in raising their dream dogs

The Emerald Park ethos

I expect puppy families to raise dogs who are:

  • Understood, not suppressed - behaviour is guided with insight, not punishment

  • Enriched, not overstimulated - mental and physical activity is purposeful and safe

  • Lean-grown, not fast-grown - nutrition and exercise prioritise long-term soundness

  • Partnered, not managed - your dog thrives as part of a cooperative, responsive household

By meeting these expectations, you help me raise Border Collies who are healthy, balanced, and capable of fulfilling their potential.

In summary

When you bring home an Emerald Park puppy, I ask that you:

  • Prioritise welfare, enrichment, and lifelong health

  • Communicate early and often

  • Follow my guidelines on exercise, weight, and care

  • Uphold a return-to-breeder ethic if rehoming is required

  • Share your puppy’s journey and celebrate their progress

Together, we can ensure every Emerald Park puppy grows into a happy, healthy, purposeful Border Collie, equipped for life with the humans who love them.
