Why Dogs Do What They Do

Understanding the science behind canine behaviour


A dog barks at the fence. Another circles before lying down.


One dog chases moving objects. Another freezes when approached by a stranger. One puppy carries socks around the house. Another follows its person from room to room.


We often describe these behaviours with simple labels.


“She's stubborn.”

“He's dominant.”

“She knows she's being naughty.”

“He's just attention seeking.”

“She does it because she knows it annoys me.”


But these explanations rarely tell us what is actually happening.


To understand dogs properly, we need to move beyond labels and ask a more useful question:

What is driving this behaviour?


Canine behaviour is not random. It is produced by a complex interaction between the nervous system, genetics, motivation, learning, emotion, the environment and the consequences of behaviour.


When we understand those influences, behaviour becomes much easier to interpret.


A dog is not simply choosing between being “good” and “bad”.


The dog is responding to its internal state and its environment using behaviour that has been shaped by biology and experience.


Behaviour is the observable part of a much bigger system


Behaviour is what we can see.


A dog runs.

A puppy bites.

A Border Collie stares.

A dog backs away.

A puppy jumps up.

A dog sniffs the ground.


But observable behaviour is only the final part of a much larger process.


Before a behaviour occurs, the dog's brain is receiving and processing information. Sensory systems detect what is happening around the dog. Internal physiological states influence how that information is interpreted. Previous learning affects expectations. Motivation influences which responses are likely to be selected.


The resulting behaviour then changes the environment.

And that consequence feeds back into future behaviour.


This is one reason behaviour can change so quickly.


The dog is continuously interacting with its environment, learning from what happens and adjusting its responses.


Behaviour is therefore better understood as a dynamic process rather than a fixed characteristic.


The brain is constantly making predictions


Modern neuroscience has increasingly highlighted the brain's role in prediction.


The brain does not simply passively receive information from the outside world. It continually uses previous experience to interpret incoming sensory information and anticipate what may happen next.


Imagine a dog hearing a particular sound at the front gate.


If previous experiences have consistently been followed by the arrival of visitors, the sound may immediately become meaningful.


The dog's arousal may increase.

Its attention shifts.

It moves towards the gate.

It may bark.


The dog is not necessarily thinking about this in the way a human would consciously think about it. Rather, its nervous system has learned relationships between events.


This is one reason history matters so much when interpreting behaviour.


The same environmental event can produce very different responses in two dogs because the dogs have different learning histories.


One dog hears a vacuum cleaner and ignores it.

Another dog hears the same sound and immediately leaves the room.


The difference is not necessarily obedience.


It may be learning.

Motivation is central to behaviour


One of the most important concepts in behavioural science is motivation.


A behaviour is more likely to occur when the consequences or outcomes associated with that behaviour are valuable to the individual at that particular moment.


But motivation is not simply about food.


Dogs can be motivated by many different outcomes and behavioural systems.


Food.

Social interaction.

Play.

Movement.

Exploration.

Access to particular environments.

Scent investigation.

Chasing.

Manipulating objects.

Avoiding something unpleasant.

Seeking safety.

Obtaining control over distance.


The relative value of these outcomes can change from moment to moment.


A hungry dog may find food exceptionally valuable.

A highly aroused Border Collie watching sheep may find movement extraordinarily compelling.

A frightened dog may value increasing distance from a person far more than it values a piece of food.


This is why asking “Why doesn't my dog listen?” is sometimes the wrong question.


A more useful question is:

What is competing with the behaviour I am asking for?


If the environment contains something the dog finds substantially more important, the behaviour we want may simply have less motivational value at that moment.


Behavioural systems: the deeper architecture


Dogs possess a range of evolved behavioural systems that help them interact with the world.


These systems are not isolated switches. They interact with one another and are influenced by both internal state and environmental conditions.


Exploration, feeding, social interaction, defence, reproduction, play, predatory behaviour and rest all involve different patterns of motivation and behaviour.


In working breeds, selective breeding has also shaped particular behavioural tendencies.

Border Collies provide an excellent example.


Generations of selection for working livestock have influenced tendencies relating to visual attention, movement sensitivity, orientation, stalking and controlled pursuit.


This does not mean every Border Collie will behave identically.


Genetics influence tendencies, not predetermined outcomes.


A dog's behaviour emerges from the interaction between inherited characteristics and experience.

This distinction is critically important.


A Border Collie may have a strong tendency to orient towards movement, but that does not mean the dog is destined to chase cars.


A dog may have a strong interest in scent, but that does not mean it cannot learn to walk calmly past interesting smells.

Behavioural tendencies create probabilities.


Learning and environment influence how those tendencies are expressed.


Learning changes the future


One of the fundamental principles of behavioural science is that behaviour is influenced by its consequences.


If a behaviour produces an outcome that increases the likelihood of that behaviour occurring again, the behaviour is reinforced.


This is reinforcement.


Importantly, reinforcement is not synonymous with food, praise or something that humans consider pleasant.

Reinforcement is defined by its effect on behaviour.


If a dog jumps up and receives attention, and jumping subsequently becomes more frequent, that attention functioned as reinforcement.

If a dog pulls towards another dog and eventually reaches it, access to the other dog may reinforce pulling.

If a dog barks at a person approaching the house and the person moves away, the removal of the person may reinforce barking if the barking subsequently becomes more likely in similar circumstances.


The dog's brain is learning:

This behaviour produced an outcome.


That outcome can influence future behaviour.


This is why simply telling a dog not to perform a behaviour often fails to address the underlying learning history.


We need to consider what is maintaining the behaviour.


Classical conditioning: when one thing predicts another


Not all learning involves the dog deliberately performing a behaviour to obtain an outcome.


Classical conditioning occurs when previously neutral stimuli become associated with biologically significant events.


A simple example is the sound of a lead being picked up.

Initially, the sound may have little significance.

But if the lead is repeatedly followed by going for a walk, the sound itself can acquire meaning.

The dog may become excited before the walk has even begun.

The sound has become a predictor.

This type of learning is extremely important in canine behaviour.


Dogs can develop emotional responses to particular people, places, objects, sounds and contexts because of their associations with previous experiences.


This helps explain why a dog may become anxious as soon as it enters a veterinary clinic, even before anything unpleasant happens.


The environment has become predictive.


The dog's nervous system has learned what usually comes next.


Habituation and sensitisation


Dogs also learn about repeated stimuli.

When a stimulus is repeatedly encountered without meaningful consequence, the response may decrease over time. This process is known as habituation.


A puppy living in a household gradually learns that the washing machine, refrigerator and ordinary household noises are not significant events.


But repetition does not always produce habituation.


Sometimes repeated exposure can produce sensitisation, in which the response becomes stronger.


This distinction is extremely important when raising puppies.


Simply exposing a puppy repeatedly to something does not guarantee that the puppy will become comfortable with it.

If the puppy is experiencing the stimulus as threatening or overwhelming, repeated exposure may increase rather than decrease the emotional response.


Good socialisation therefore requires careful consideration of intensity, duration, context and the puppy's emotional state.


Emotion changes behaviour


Behaviour cannot be separated from emotion.


Fear, frustration, excitement, anticipation and stress can all influence what a dog is capable of doing in a particular moment.


Consider a puppy that has learned a beautiful sit at home.

At home, the behaviour is easy.

Take the puppy into a busy environment filled with unfamiliar people, dogs, smells and movement, and suddenly the sit disappears.


The puppy has not necessarily forgotten the behaviour.

The nervous system is dealing with a dramatically different level of stimulation.

Arousal affects attention, information processing, impulse control and behavioural flexibility.


This is why training cannot be separated from emotional regulation.


A dog that is overwhelmed may not be in an optimal state for learning the behaviour we are asking for.


Sometimes the solution is not more repetition.


It is reducing the difficulty.


Stress changes the way dogs respond


The nervous system is designed to respond to challenges.


Acute stress can be adaptive. It helps an animal detect and respond to potential threats.


The problem occurs when challenges exceed the individual's ability to cope, or when stressors accumulate without adequate recovery.


A dog experiencing chronic or repeated stress may show changes in behaviour, arousal, sleep, learning and emotional responses.


This is also why the idea of the “emotional cup” is useful as a practical metaphor, even though it is not a literal neurobiological structure.


A dog does not experience each event in isolation.

Poor sleep, environmental unpredictability, social conflict, frustration, pain, excessive stimulation and unfamiliar experiences can interact.


When the overall load becomes too high, behaviour can change.

The dog that normally copes beautifully may suddenly bark, lunge, mouth, pace or withdraw.


That behaviour may be communication from an overloaded nervous system rather than evidence of a character flaw.


Frustration is a powerful behavioural force


Frustration occurs when an expected outcome is blocked or unavailable.


Dogs experience frustration just as other mammals do.

A puppy wants to greet another dog but cannot.

A dog wants access to a toy but cannot reach it.

A Border Collie sees movement but is prevented from following it.

A dog wants to go outside but the door remains closed.


The resulting emotional state can increase arousal and produce behaviours such as barking, jumping, whining, pulling, biting or repetitive movement.


This is why frustration tolerance is an important developmental skill.


Dogs do not automatically know how to cope with being prevented from obtaining something they want.

They learn.


Appropriate experiences of waiting, disengaging, switching activities and recovering from disappointment can gradually build behavioural flexibility.


Breed matters, but breed is not destiny


Breed is one of the most important biological factors to consider when interpreting behaviour.

Dogs were selectively bred for different purposes, and those selection pressures influenced behavioural tendencies.

Retrievers were selected for retrieving.

Scent hounds were selected for following odour.

Livestock guardian dogs were selected for guarding.

Terriers were selected for behaviours associated with locating and controlling small prey.

Border Collies were developed for highly specialised livestock work.


Understanding these histories helps us understand why certain behaviours are particularly salient to particular dogs.

A Border Collie may notice movement that another dog barely registers.

A scent hound may become deeply absorbed in an odour trail.

A terrier may be intensely interested in small, rapidly moving animals.


These are not necessarily training failures.

They may be expressions of behavioural predispositions that have been shaped by generations of selective breeding.

The challenge is not to suppress every breed-typical behaviour.

It is to provide appropriate outlets while teaching the dog how to function safely within a human environment.


Context changes behaviour


A dog does not behave the same way in every environment.

This is because behaviour is context dependent.

A dog may recall beautifully from the backyard but struggle at the park.

A puppy may settle calmly in the living room but become highly aroused when visitors arrive.

A dog may walk beautifully on a quiet street but pull towards every smell in a new environment.


This is normal.


Learning is often initially context specific.

As training progresses, behaviours can generalise across environments, but generalisation should not be assumed.

Dogs need opportunities to learn that a behaviour applies in different contexts.


This is one reason effective training is not simply about repetition.

It is about helping the dog understand how a behaviour works across changing circumstances.


What about “dominance”?

Few concepts have caused more confusion in dog behaviour than dominance.


Dominance is a legitimate scientific concept describing aspects of social relationships, particularly priority of access to resources among individuals in particular social contexts.


However, it is frequently misused as a blanket explanation for canine behaviour.

A dog jumping on the couch is not necessarily trying to dominate its owner.

A dog pulling on lead is not necessarily attempting to become leader of the household.

A puppy ignoring a recall is not necessarily challenging authority.


These behaviours can have many different causes.

Learning history.

Motivation.

Arousal.

Reinforcement.

Development.

Breed tendencies.

Fear.

Frustration.

Environmental context.


The label “dominant” tells us very little about what is actually maintaining the behaviour.

Good behavioural analysis asks what is happening, when it happens, what precedes it and what follows it.


Behaviour is information


Perhaps the most useful shift we can make as dog owners is to stop viewing behaviour purely as something to control.

Behaviour provides information.


A dog that moves away is telling us something.

A dog that repeatedly sniffs instead of approaching may be communicating uncertainty.

A dog that becomes frantic around movement may be showing a powerful motivational response.

A puppy that becomes mouthy when overtired may be struggling with arousal and fatigue.

A dog that suddenly changes behaviour may be experiencing pain, illness, environmental stress or another underlying change.


Behaviour does not always tell us exactly what the dog is feeling or thinking.

But it gives us data.


Our job is to interpret that data carefully rather than immediately assigning a moral explanation.


The science of behaviour is about asking better questions


When a dog does something we dislike, our first instinct is often:

“How do I stop this?”


A more scientific approach begins with different questions.

What happened immediately before the behaviour?

What exactly did the dog do?

What happened immediately afterwards?

What might the dog have gained or avoided?

What emotional state was the dog in?

What has happened in the past when the dog behaved this way?

Is the behaviour developmentally appropriate?

Could pain or another physical factor be contributing?

Could breed-typical motivation be involved?

Is the environment making the desired behaviour unusually difficult?

What behaviour would we like the dog to perform instead?


These questions move us away from judgement and towards understanding.

And understanding is where effective behaviour modification begins.


Why dogs do what they do


There is rarely a single answer.


A dog behaves the way it does because its nervous system is responding to a particular combination of biology, learning, motivation, emotion, environment and history.

Sometimes the explanation is straightforward.

Sometimes it is complex.

Often, several influences are operating simultaneously.


The more we understand about canine neurobiology and learning theory, the less useful simplistic labels become.


Dogs are not machines programmed to obey.

Nor are they furry humans making deliberate moral choices.

They are sentient animals with sophisticated nervous systems, evolved behavioural systems, individual temperaments and remarkable capacities for learning.


When we understand behaviour scientifically, we can replace frustration with curiosity.


Instead of asking:

“Why is my dog being difficult?”


we can ask:

“What is this behaviour telling me, and what is influencing it?”


That question changes everything.


Because when we understand why dogs do what they do, we are in a much better position to help them learn what we would like them to do instead.
